If It’s Not Written Down, It Doesn’t Exist

By Aurelius Consulting Group

In face-to-face sales, everything comes down to the conversation: rapport, trust, a deal sealed with a handshake. But there’s one trap that catches even the strongest salespeople, they keep everything in their head. Here’s our simple truth: if it’s not written down, it doesn’t exist.

Why This Matters Most in Face-to-Face Sales

Commitments evaporate. The client says, “Call me after the 15th, once we finalize the budget.” Two weeks later, all you remember is “something about a budget.” A written commitment is a next step. An unwritten one is a lost deal. The details ARE the sale. The one who has to ask again looks forgettable.

Memory lies. After five meetings in one day, the conversations blur into one. Two minutes of notes right after a meeting are worth more than an hour of trying to remember that night.

What to Write Down After Every Meeting

  • The next step and the date. Not “we’ll stay in touch,” but “call on the 28th at 10 AM, send the quote by Friday.”
  • Objections and reactions. What’s really holding the client back, price, timing, trust?
  • Personal details. Anything that helps you reconnect next time.
  • Your own read.

How to Make It a Habit

  1. Write it down immediately. Five minutes in the car after the meeting, while it’s still fresh.
  2. One system. CRM, phone notes, or a notebook, it doesn’t matter, as long as you use the same system every single day.
  3. Review before every meeting. Notes only work if you actually open them before the next touchpoint.

The Payoff

Salespeople who log every interaction don’t close more because they’re smoother talkers. They close more because nothing slips through the cracks between meetings: no forgotten calls, no lost commitments, no “wait, what did we talk about last time?”.
